March Fishing Report - The Ria in Chelem Mexico

Posted by Travel Merida on Thursday, March 5, 2015, In : Snook Fishing
First I have to say the fishing so far this year in the Ria here in Chelem Yucatan Mexico has been awesome. Today, March 5th, has again proved that to be true. With 17 speckled sea trout caught, all on top water popping lures, the action was a blast had by all 4 of us.

So far though this year no tarpon or snook, which is normal as we won't see them return to the Ria in masses until the early summer months thru the fall. But as you can see the Specks have been awesome. Using the light action ge...

MId January Fishing Report

Posted by Travel Merida on Saturday, January 17, 2015, In : Snook Fishing
What a beautiful Saturday this turned out to be. The forecasters for sure got it right. Light westerly wind, cool temps, and when this happens, the BIG trout turn on. Speckled Sea Trout that is. They are abundant back in the Ria and today the big ones showed up indeed.

Larry, his wife Sherry and I caught a total of 15 trout, 5 we threw back and of the final 10, 6 were over 2 pounds, one at 2.6 and the last caught by myself, 3.6 pounds, ranks as one of the biggies caught here in the past four y...

Winter Time Fishing in the Ria, Progeso Mexico

Posted by Travel Merida on Sunday, January 4, 2015, In : Snook Fishing
First let me say this, i am so pleased to see such clear water back in the Ria. I have fished these waters now for 4 years, and last year I was so shocked to see from December thru March, the water was dirty and cloudy and the fishing sucked! I was turning down tours because I just did not want to takes folks money when I knew the bite was dead. This was due to an abnormal increase in rain fall the late summer before that, as all our water runs underground, it pops up via springs in the mangr...

October 2014 Fishing Report / Fall Season Report

Posted by Randy on Tuesday, October 21, 2014, In : Snook Fishing
Ok, ok, ok, I know it has been since May since I posted a fishing report. Forgive me, been really busy and not much of a writer. The fishing since the spring here in Ria has been for the most part awesome as it always is. Don't get me wrong, because of tidal, weather and water clarity, the fishing sometimes is more like fishing instead of catching. I would step out and say that 90% of the times we have had clients out or just myself, the fishing is AWESOME.

Top water is still the lure of choi...

Here in the Yucatan of Mexico, the fishing has turned to freekin awesome!! With the winter Nortes behind us, the water back in the Ria has cleared up and the big fish have returned. We had clients a few weeks ago and caught 17 sea trout, with myself catching the largest I have ever caught back there, a 6 pound lunker. The coolest part of it, it is with all top water hard plastic lures. The explosions when these fish hit is so exciting!!

January 2014 Fishing Report

Posted by Travel Merida on Saturday, January 4, 2014, In : Snook Fishing
January here in the Yucatan can be tricky for catching a good calm day to actually go fishing. Norte's as they are called here, or a cold front, always seems to come from the northeast and can blow up to 20 km an hour, making ocean fishing out of the question. If it is not raining, then Ria fishing can still be possible on the down side of the mangroves. The bite is tough, snook and tarpon seem to stop, you can see them in the shallows, but they are a tough bite when a Norte is over head. The...

The key to tarpon fishing is.......

Posted by YUCATAN SNOOK on Saturday, February 13, 2010, In : Snook Fishing
The key to tarpon fishing is keeping your presentation as natural as possible. Tarpon are fish with a very keen awareness of their surroundings. I learned much about tarpon a long time ago in Florida. I was staying in a place off a saltwater lake that was teaming with tarpon in the twenty to fifty pound range. It was my first time fishing for tarpon. You could see them swimming in the water but whenever I place bait near them they would not grab it. I noticed they would swim by areas that I w...

Snook Fishing Secrets

Posted by Mexico Fishing Adventures on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, In : Snook Fishing

Light Tackle Tactics for Big Fish

Today everybody uses light tackle for snook. Yet there are still many misconceptions about snook gear.

The most important piece of equipment for catching big snook on light tackle is the rod. Scott uses long stiff rods for several reasons.

First of all the whitebait that is so important to a successful snook trip between March and October can be easily thrown off when casting. Also ...

SKIPPIN' AND POPPIN' AND MANGROVE MIGRAINES

Posted by Mexico Fishing Adventures on Wednesday, December 23, 2009, In : Snook Fishing

SKIPPIN' AND POPPIN' AND MANGROVE MIGRAINES

SCIENTISTS REMAIN AMBIGUOUS on whether it's possible for a mangrove to reach out and grab a snook plug. But personally, I'm convinced. I've seen them do it many times.

In fact, I suspect that the mangrove was genetically engineered by a crazed snook-plug manufacturer, for the express purpose of maximizing his sales. That's the only explanation of a tree that grows with its twisti...
